Montserrat Meditations - Pope
Contemporary 10-part piece (SSSAAATTBB) interweaving all ten surviving songs from the 14th century Montserrat Codex (Llibre Vermell de Montserrat - Red Book of Montserrat). Composer Anna Pope says "the medieval musicscape of Montserrat has long captured my imagination, and the Lumina Vocal Ensemble has recorded and performed many of the pieces. The possibilities of overlaying and creating interplay between the pieces has long intrigued me, and in particular, playing on the harmonic and thematic synergies of the pieces. The Virgin Mary is the main character in most of the pieces, with reference also made to the human condition. Mediaeval pilgrims were reminded that their mortal flesh 'hastened towards death' at the same time as their souls were redeemed by Mary’s intersession with her son."
