When David Heard - Pope
'When David Heard' is a challenging C21 work by Anna Pope for bass solo and SSATBB a capella choir.
Based on the moving and tragic story of King David and the death of his son Absalom, the work is partly inspired by settings by Tomkins, Weelkes, Whitacre and Josquin.
Anna Pope's 'When David Heard' delves into the complexity of David's grief, a great man suffering guilt and a sense of loss which leads him to cry the famous words "would God I had died for thee, O Absalom my son".
